Not necessarily. You might have the wrong speakers selected.
Take a look at this picture

You should have something similar to this in control panel, sound. You need hi definition speakers selected.... What do you have in your list?

    - volume sliders are all the way up (check)
    - mute is off (check)

What do I have in my list of playback devices?

    Only one thing:

    Speakers!
Realtek High Definition Audio (With SRS)
    Working

    - is it selected? (check)
    - can i hear sound? (nope)

    (Help!)

I see the button but I can't click on it. Its greyed out...dead...inactive...

And what do you mean when you say it passed the speaker test? Cos I've been pressing the "Auto test" button and the speakers in the picture are blinking but no sound is coming out. And I can't click on the drop down list under speaker configuration because its greyed out. And so is the "Set Default Device" button...its greyed out too. That's why I can't click on it. I tried but nothing happened.

Do you know what causes those buttons to become inactive?

OK, start at step 3 here It's not for your computer, but the principles are exactly the same.

If it still won't work, can you back up all your data and then run the factory restore?
