Speaking of Youtube, this song just won't stop playing in my head!

I've got fond memories of London Calling! As much as I like Train in Vain, I always had a soft spot for Rock the Casbah, 'cause the video was shot in Austin. I like remembering the city when the streets were passable and the air was clean.

Speaking of songs stuck in ones head. I heard this just before Valentines Day and it's been stuck with me since then.

Yes I may be a person who likes Industrial but that doesn't mean I won't listen to songs in other genres. I mean hell I'd be a fool not to appreciate good music from other people like Patsy Cline and so on.

One Script to bring them all,

Nice choices from Ms. Rusby, especially The Wild Goose. Spent most of the day in the field listening to nothing much, but after collecting the kids at school, I took a break with Pat Benatar's True Love and Jane Monheit's Taking a Chance on Love.

Love the way she gets her voice to sound like a penny whistle, the phrasing and the vibrato.

The better half loves Dido! Not my cup o' tea, though. Lately I have been on a big Rolling Stones kick.

Just at the moment, I'm listening to Norah Jones singing In The Dark. I plan to follow it with some Diana Krall and Nancy Wilson, specifics to be decided later. Absolutely need something soothing. I'm way over quota for dealing with assorted half-wits, morons, and massively incompetent "'professionals".

    Arvo Pärt: Tabula Rasa

    Gidon Kremer: Silencio

"One searches in the outer world as well as in others' reflections of oneself — with all its insecurities, joys, convictions, evaluations. The world observes these oscillations of our feelings with a proud indifference. Here and there a person hurries by, producing a sound that resembles one's own. But it's already gone, and one is again embraced by silence. Our pain and insomnia as part of the whole. Our despair: a drop in an ocean. Death — the final bill, in which the challenge turns into a phantom. amb1tions, hopes, enchantment. All this finds its peace there in the world beyond.

...Words irritate. Gestures mislead. Emotions dissolve. Only sounds speak a language that might be understood. If one opens the heart, would there be someone receptive enough? But who is listening? Who is able to feel it? Often I do ask myself, where does a heartbeat identical to mine exist? And the attempt of an answer is: out there, on the other end of my own sound."

    — Gidon Kremer, from Obertöne

    Tabula Rasa, second movement, Silentium

    Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS91uQzzvGU

    Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqa2Fnoo9RQ

Not the best performance of the piece but an interesting staging of it.

And yes, Platypus, Parts 1 and 2 are both Arvo Pärt's.

    Edit:

    Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev 1803 - 1873

    Silentium!
Be silent, hide yourself, keep in
Your feelings and your sacred dream –
And let them, quiet, rise and set,
Soundlessly – in your heart’s depth,
Like stars do on the nightly rut:
Admire them, but just be mute.

How could your heart express its view?
Could any other feel like you?
Will he discern your base of life?
    The word, pronounced, is a lie;
While stirring springs, you’ll cloud flood:
Drink their water, but be mute.

Within yourself, keep life in hold:
Your soul is a whole world
Of thoughts of mystery and charm,
They will be sunk in daily hum,
And scattered by the sun’s rays, rude:
Hark to their song, and just be mute.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, October, 2000

    Re-edit:

    Silentium!
Speak not, lie hidden, and conceal
the way you dream, the things you feel.
Deep in your spirit let them rise
akin to stars in crystal skies
that set before the night is blurred:
delight in them and speak no word.
How can a heart expression find?
How should another know your mind?
Will he discern what quickens you?
A thought, once uttered, is untrue.
Dimmed is the fountainhead when stirred:
drink at the source and speak no word.
Live in your inner self alone
within your soul a world has grown,
the magic of veiled thoughts that might
be blinded by the outer light,
drowned in the noise of day, unheard...
take in their song and speak no word.
    /trans. by Vladimir Nabokov/
