IBM Lenovo X60
I have the joy of installing the OS on this laptop which has no CD player or floppy. It has a new hard drive where as the old HDD had the preinstall on it. Apparently the old HDD crashed and nothing was recoverable. My question is do I need to make an external USB Hdd bootable with a copy of XP Pro cd on the HDD in order to boot to it to install the OS on the new HDD? If so what do I use, the HP bootable utility? Sorry if this has been covered before.

usb cdrom would do the trick.. since it should allow bootable usb devices in the bios.
You would then just boot from the xp cd.

Thanks NooNoo, thought about that as well, however, local stores have no usb cdroms, they have usb dvd burners for about a $100 which seems a little highto me. Need to have this done by Monday.

Well, finally fixed the problem. Took hard drive out of lappy, installed in desktop with sata connections, installed windows XP Sp2, made sure no drivers were loaded, and then put back in lappy. Downloading drivers for it. I wish I did have a usb/ide connector. This would have been simple then. Thank you for the help.

They are a few bucks... I suggest you invest in one.

The usb/ide/sata cable is much more flexible - you can use it with any ide/sata and laptop drive.

USB drive adapters are one of the biggest life savers ever. I use them for data recovery, malware removal, data transfer, you name it. The other must-have for a tool box is a large capacity pen drive. 16 GB units are around $40 and you can get 64 GB for around $140.
