memorex I/O dvd burner double layer (external)
I use system windows xp service pack 3
e-machine T3302 AMD Semphron(tm) processor
3300+ with 2. GHz, 1.4GB of RAM
External Memorex I/O double layer DVD burner does not read or write any more. The weird thing is that the computer recognizes it only when the drive is empty. As soon as I insert a CD/DVD the mouse pointer gets stuck or stalls canceling other functions like right clicking on it. The problem started when my ISO image creator software created an error in the middle of an ISO image file burning process. I do not have the error log, but I remember that it says aborting process or something similar to that. The error was taking too long to eject the disc and I manually closed the program software by clicking on “ok” on “program not responding” window. Then, I turned off the DVD burner and turned it back on again. Since then, the drive is not responding when reading or writing a CD/DVD.
I tried to fix the problem by uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it, but did not good. Also, I tried to use different image writing software such Nero, DVD decrypter, Roxio and they don’t detect an SCSI/ATAPI devices when the burner is on, but when I go to my computer the drive is there but as soon as I insert DVD/CD the mouse pointer has a small disc icon next to it that continuously goes on and off along with the mouse pointer and does nothing else. It could stay doing that for hours, maybe forever.
Do you guys have any idea what could be the problem?
Please help
Regards
Rogimor

Try booting from a bootable disc to see if the drive is working properly. I have seen way more instances where the drive is bad than where there is a software issue.
