Unhappy No ADI Codec Driver is Installed

OS : Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
Mother Board : ASUS P4P8X SE
    Processor : Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
    BIOS Version/Date : American Megatrends Inc. 080009, 10/24/2003
Total Physical Memory : 256.00 MB

Multimedia Audio Controller - SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
OEM Device from ASUSTeK Computer Inc
Chip: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
    Codec : ADI AD1888
    PnpID : VEN_11AB&DEV_4320&SUBSYS_811A1043&REV_13

    Problem:
Sound was working perfectly until I recently re-installed Win XP Pro. I installed the Soundmax Drivers from the mother board CD for the AD1888 Codec. When the installation is complete I am prompted to reboot my system. When the system has rebooted I get the following message box error when I login:

Message Box Error Text on Login

"No ADI Codec driver is Installed"

    Device Manager Properties Text

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

    Steps Taken to Resolve :
1.) I downloaded the drivers from ASUS web site but during the installed it said that the driver on the motherboard CD is newer.

2.) I ran the driver install process explicitly as an administrator. No Change.

3.) I ran the driver install through the Add/Remove Programs. No Change.

4.) I deleted the driver and let XP detect it. I got the following error at the end of the hardware wizard:

    Add Hardware Wizard Text

    Cannot Install this Hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware

Multimedia Audio Controller or SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

An error occurred during the installation of the device

    The data is invalid

5.) I verified the permissions on the PCI and Subkeys in the registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\P CI
This was described in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article : 841567

6.) I did a fresh install of XP and tried to reinstall SoundMax. NoChange.

7.) I was able to enable verbose setup logging, and the log text is as follows :

    Setupapi.log Log Text

    @ 13:00:42.703 #I336 Copying file "C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ksuser.dll" to "C:\WINDOWS\System32\ksuser.dll" via temporary file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\SET4B.tmp".

    Cool

    Your download

    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...S-X/AD1888.zip

Once downloaded unzip to a folder, go into divice manager remove any drivers etc. listed under sound devices, then run your setup.exe
this is taking into account that your sound device is enabled in bios.

    This problem is resolved.

Finally Issue resolved !!!! The XP install was the culprit, it was a bad XP install.

I reinstalled XP Pro with a new CD and Sound Max installed without a hitch.

Smile Thank you for posting this issue

I ran into the same issue with an ASUS S-Presso machine (P4P8X) (P4P8T exactly) and WINXP HOME.

The driver link you provided above finally resolved my week long struggle.

    Thank you Thank you.

Did not have to reinstall XP.

    Welcome to Windrivers Profile1

Does your motherboard CD have specific Vista drivers for your sound? Did you install the Vista chipset drivers first?

    which d530 type is it?

IF your XP install didn't get ALL drivers onboard, try clicking 'start', then 'Run', then enter 'sfc /scannow' and have your XP cd ready.

Then get your driver from the link above.

Had the same problem on my Dell GX620 after doing a reinstall of XP
    Eventually fixed problem.
After install I installed an Nvidia graphics card; this change the sound driver from SoundMax to an nvidia driver. At this point lost sound; and any reinstall caused the no ADI codec error.
2 easy solutions; either change the driver been used in the control panel - sounds or install a 3rd party driver such as the Omega drivers
    Hope this helps

Welcome to Windrivers Versio - thanks for the tip... but I am puzzled as to why a graphics card driver would reinstall the sound...unless you got the nforce drivers? These are drivers for nvidia based motherboards which contain chipset, ethernet, sound and onboard video...

Hello, Hereje! Can you tell us more about your hardware? It would be helpful to know what motherboard your system has, or if it is a branded computer such as an HP, etc. and the model.
