Realtek AC97 Problem
Hi,
After searching the internet for hours in attempt to resolve this problem, I've finally decided to seek help. After a re-installation of Windows XP Pro, I have no sound. Upon boot up, I get the message that new hardware is detected, which is Realtek AC97 Audio. This device is also listed as not installed in Device Manager. When I attempt to install it, the progress bar gets all the way to the end and then restarts my computer. I've tried booting in safe mode and the progress bar goes all the way. However, when I re attempt to load Windows it doesn't allow me, stating that this may be due to a recent hardware change. This results in me having to load last known good configuration.
Below are my system specs:
OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
System Manufacturer: IBM
System Model: 8193KUQ
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz for IBM ThinkCentre
Memory: 1014MB RAM
Motherboard Name: IBM 8193KUQ
If any other information is needed, let me know.
Thank you.

What driver are you trying and where did you get it?
IBM shows 3 possible drivers - 2 x ADI and one Soundblaster; http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...534.html#audio
Quite often the 'Realtek' discovery is chipset based and meaningless.
Did you install the 'INF' (chipset) driver?

If it was me
I would download this file and save it.
Then go to it and extract it to a folder.
Make a new one called Sound or something.
The go to the "Other Device or whatever is trying to be installed and do a driver update, and point it to the folder you extracted to.
Let it do the update

I installed the driver from the website you provided, CCT, and to my surprised, my sound has finally returned. Thank you very much for your assistance, after three days of trying to fix this, it is finally done.
Thank you aswell, Ferrit, for your support in resolving this issue.

I currently have this problem - a Code 10 error and the yellow exclamation mark next to the AC97 bit in Device Manager.
Rather annoyingly the sound was fine on my PC until 3 days ago when I inadvertantly removed the Realtek AC97 program in Control Panel by mistake
My motherboard is an ECS K7SOM+. I had this problem when I first installed XP Pro years back but I managed to fix it somehow after a week of installs/uninstalls/banging my head against the wall.
I've tried installing the drivers from the www.ecsusa....site but no joy.
I've also tried the Realtek ones as I remember the old drivers had the Realtek logo ( SiSoft Sandra report shows the device as C-Media AC97 Audio Device
)
I've downloaded about 5 different versions of the drivers from different sites but had no joy with them either.
It seems to be a common problem with this card and XP Pro?
I believe I have the SiS740 CPU chipset if that is relevant.
Any suggestions?

Intel Mod
Simple Communications Controller is normally the onboard modem - try installing the PCTel Modem drivers.

There are a couple of things to check initially re the sound and W. Media Player;
Does the speaker icon appear in your Task Bar?
If so, right click it and left click Adjust Audio Properties.
Left click audio and report what the default devices show.
Left click volume and make sure the slider is full right.
Then, close those windows and left click Start, then Run, and type in DXDIAG and enter.
Let that update, then look under Sound and check that there are no problems hilighted and that hardware acceleration is max and then run the tests.
Also, left click DirectX Files and see if any problems show.
