    Rebooting Problem

I have had this problem for a few months and haven't been able to solve it. Maybe one time out of ten restarts the computer won't boot into windows from bios. I have changed cables, cmos battery put a new hard drive in and of course reloaded XP Home. I have changed video cards, changed floppy drives all to no avail. I was wondering if anyone would have an idea what is causing the problem.

Can you expand a bit on "won't boot into windows"? What exactly happens? Does it freeze? Do you get a blank screen? A crash?

I just get a blank screen, then when I reboot again windows may or not boot up. Sometimes I have to try booting up to four times to get windows to boot up. It has gotten a lot better since I changed the cmos battery. It may go for two to three weeks without bothering.

Make sure that there are no USB hard drives connected while booting, I have seen that cause exactly the problem you describe.

Guts3d, Thank you for sharing that, I hadn't even thought about that. I do keep a USB external drive connected that I do the backup for that computer on. I will have to disconnect it to see if it helps.

    Are the capacitors bulged?

No. I have unhooked the USB external hard drive and restarted a few times so far it is working, I will see. I have a new motherboard I haven't used saving it for with other components for a new build of Windows 7. I just would like to get this computer working properly in case I want to sell it or give it to someone.

How old is the power supply? Is the power supply rated to handle the hardware? Have you tested the power supply to see if it isn't giving random output?

The power supply is a 500 watt Antec which I put in when I changed the hard drive.

As Guts3D said I think you need to visually inspect the capacitors?
What your describing may indeed be caused by capacitors.

As I said to Guts3d they are all right, I have looked the whole board over more than once over the past couple of months.

Just a quick thought, you haven't changed the jumpers on the cd/dvd or hard drive lately? Swapped any IDE wires?

Is there a cd/dvd in the drive? If so, remove it. Sometimes, if the drive can't read the media correctly, it will stop the boot process.
