windows xp and alcatel pc suite
I am having trouble installing alcatel pc suite. My windows xp machine is usign a default hard drive seting of f and this program seems to be requiring c:. I login to administrative tools, and click on computer management, and than click on disk management, i click on my f: drive which I would like to rename to c. And I get the error messAge "windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume". I would appreciate help with this.

Windows was re-installed on this computer. There was probably a card reader, and or a usb drive when the re-install happened. You need to back up all your data, format the drive, unplug the card reader, and re-install Windows.

Or, I'd think you could disconnect that drive, put in a new one, format it as C:\, install XP, then reconnect that old drive and do a File and Settings transfer to it.
Like that maybe.

Woah woah woah... why are we doing all of that? All you should have to do is go into manage, and change the Drive letter and Paths. Or are we avoiding something I'm not aware of?
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

Change all of the f: references to c: before the renaming? LOL no I don't advise that but it's worthy of me experimenting with soon on a virtual machine.

I already went into management and tried to change the letter to c: and it would not let me. How could I go into the registry?

You would be in the registry for days. And it would have to be done without re-booting, power loss, etc. If you missed one entry, you could be screwed. There is no fast way of fixing this. Do a file and settings transfer, and save it to a spare drive, flash drive, etc. Then Format and Reload.

Paul,
Ignore my comments on this thread. I was mistaken with my first reply and my following replies were more conjecture than a solution. In fact I wouldn't advise doing any of the ideas I posted on this thread because it's too much work and too much risk. I on the other hand find it a neat experiment to see what happens and will be testing this on one of my own side machines.

It has happened to me a number of times. The solution is allways the same
Backup all data, save to another drive or system. Then be sure the extra removable drives are
either disconnected or you make completely sure when you install it picks the C partition.
All else ends in a complete FAIL
