    Jamc@m not on com1

Jamc@m, a childs PC Camera, works fine on W98 laptop, cannot get any response on a W95 P200 MMX. No other problems on this PC. Tech support at Jamc@m ran user through all standard stuff, I also did everything they had done. Changed out com1 cable. Also, if you remove com1 from W95, it picks it up next start every time. mouse is P/S 2. Any ideas?

Try going in to the BIOS and changing com1 and com2 to com2 and com1, then putting the camera on what was com2. Good luck, WU

If it is an AT case, you might try a few different cables... There are like 5000 (yes I am exaggerating) different cables you can use, and if someone pieced it together, they may have never tested it. I also recommend that you check to see if the serial port actually works. one good way of doing this is to plug in.... a serial mouse! This doesn't by ANY means do a full test on the prot, but it will tell you if it is totally hosed.

    Question

Third computer I've seen now, various manufacturer's with Com1 picking up every time but not functioning? Anyone????

    New cables - tried that.
Strip and reinstall W95/98 - tried that
    BIOS flash - still nothing.
    Com1 reports fine.

Your problem (I believe) is that the Comm port is being picked up and installed, but no resources are being assigned to it. This is common with Win98. Check Comm1 in Device Manager and I think you will see that this is the case. Remove Comm1 in Dev Mgr, go to Add New Hardware, install new comm port, and you should have a working port. Assigned resources for Comm1 should be: IRQ4, I/O 03F8-03FF.
