Netscape 4.77 "illegal operation" on shutdown of program
I installed Netscape 4.77 to a new system, AMD 1.2 -266 mhz with 256 meg DDR PC2100 ram, 60 gigs hard drive space. First I am unable to create or add email addresses/names to the address book. I even inported a list and it will stay in the Communicator address drop down until I try to exit the program. When I exit Netscape 4.77 I get the error message"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor." Under details:"Netscape caused an invalid page fault in module kernel 32.dll@017f:bff7b992."
When I go back into Netscape it comes up and operates fine, except the address book is gone again. If I type the name of the address book in the "create new" the previously imported list pops up. I still get the "invalid page fault error" when I close netscape. What is causing this and how do I fix it? Thanks in advance.

Why don't you try Internet Explorer? Netscape 4.77 probably isn't designed for that kind of system.

Unexplainable crap like this is why I hate Netscape. I used to love it but their Quality Assurance has gone down the drain. I switched to IE and no more problems.

I do agree with the above...even Netscape isn't making any new NS versions, get with the times, get IE.
If you must insist on netscape, try 4.78.

In Netscape's defence, it has a perfectly good email and newsreader program in it, which is obviously why RobT is using it as he's having trouble with the Address Book.
I use Netscape for my email/news as the MS alternatives just suck, but use IE to browse.
Anyway, it sounds like your Address Book is having problems saving to your disk - have you created a profile and then deleted it's directory or something? Try creating a new profile or updating the current profile to ensure it's got a valid path.

Antoney; You are right on the money! Last night I downloaded 4.78, completely uninstalled 4.77 and installed the new version and it worked perfectly. I had to delete my old profile and set up a new one for it to fix the glitch.
For all the other comments about Explorer....no thanks. Everytime I use it I think of Gates' future control of all software. I like Netscape much better. Yes, it has it's problems, but so does IE. So far, I don't have to tell Netscape when and what I have changed on my Computer to be allowed to use my overpriced software, aka "XP" and software "protection"...
Thanks all for the advice. I appreciated the help.
