    Post MSN Messenger trouble

In Outlook Express, I keep getting this annoying MSN Messenger pop-up window. How do I disable this?

Delete the messenger folder. It was the only way I could get rid of messenger in XP...

gpedit.msc is supposed to be the best way to disable messenger. Doing it this way apparently causes Outlook Express to run slow.

I just renamed msmsgs.exe to .old. About the same as deleteing the messenger folder.

If you want to remove Windows Messenger, click Start, Run and enter the following command:

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Note: This can cause a long delay when opening Outlook Express if you have the Contacts pane enabled. To prevent this, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Right click in the right pane and select New, Dword value. Give it the name Hide Messenger Double click this new entry and set the value to 2.

Wraps it up thanks to doug knox. Bottom half answers your question.

    Thumbs up

There is one other way to disable / completely uninstall MSN Messenger. If you edit the sysoc.inf file and remove the word HIDE from the lines in the file you will then have the option to uninstall MSN Messenger and several other programs that are installed by default under Win XP, if you feel the urge to do so.

I may be missing the point here, but if you just want the popup message gone, but still use Messenger from time to time...wouldn't you just go into Messenger and Outlook tools and uncheck the options to turn Messenger on when windows or Outlook Express are started? [And the one that allows Messenger to run in the background.]
