    Name Resolution???

Can someone explain to me how a name is resolved on a peer tp peer network when the lmhost files haven't been touched and there isn't a DNS server or WINS server present? Say for instance when you have 2 98 boxes that are connected with a X-over cable. How does one machine know what the other host name is in network neighborhood?

There are two methods of resolution, netbios names and dns names. When you're running 98 you're using netbios. The neames are resolved via arp broadcasts. Also, in a netbios network there's always a browsemaster (eventually). The browsemaster holds netbios names for the lan and allows you to view computers in network neighborhood. When you try to connect to a machine by netbios name in a command prompt you directly initiate an arp and can often view machines that you can't see when the browsemaster is offline, not updated or simply confused (which is often the case.)
