silly question from an old fart???
I have UT and Q3 and does a new "point release" add new weapons or characters or places to go in the game? or is there particular patches or updates I can download so my kids have new stuff to do? or what's the deal?
Taz,I looked at that site you gave me,but I am still confused as to what I should get to enhance the games?
TIA,,any help is much appreciated. Dan

The point releases basically are like service pack, they may add minor new features and fix bugs, but they won't add weapons or significantly affect gameplay.
There are several add-ons for Quake 3 which will significantly change the way the game is played. One example is Rocket Arena, where it turns the game into a pure one-on-one battle.

Another example is Urban Terror, which is a complete conversion of Quake 3 into a realistic battle in all sorts of city situations. This includes all new weapons and tactics not found in the original Q3. http://www.urbanterror.net/

The only benefits I've seen from the Q3 Point Releases have been enhanced mutiplayer (online) gaming, weapon modifications (lightning gun appearance) and some "pro" versions of standard maps with little changes here and there.
It's mandatory for you to have the same PR as the servers you are logging into, but if you're not into online/multiplayer gaming outside your home, I wouldn't fret too much about it.
As for mods, there's just a world full of them out there available to suit your fancy and reviewed at http://www.planetquake.com/quake3/features/motw/.
I especially like the DeFrag mod Taz pointed to some time ago. Pure rush if you want to practice.
