New build boot problem
Hi Folks. New build, clean install of WINXP with all driver and Windows updates installed. System was burned in and tested fully. When all was done I went to the Bios setup and enabled boot sector virus protection and the system would not boot.
When system is booted in Safe Mode it halts when attempting to load the following driver -> mup.sys. With boot sector virus protection disabled the system works fine. I did not attempt to re-install the OS. Techs at my other location have reported the same problem with other Shuttle and some Asus mainboards. The posted Bios update at the Shuttle website doesn't mention this problem. No help at MS or Shuttle or the Bios outfit. Currently I'm quite happy to leave the boot sector virus protection disabled as we ship our systems with NAV 2003 installed anyways.
Still....?
Anyone seen this before?
Specs
Shuttle MK32N mainboard
XP1700+
DDR 256
40/7200 Seagate
48X Lite-on CDRW
WinXP Home
What I know about computers would fill volumes - what I don't know would fill a wharehouse.

Just because the bios update doesn't mention the problem, don't mean to say it won't fix it!
I would upgrade the bios anyway and then email Shuttle and see what they have to say.

Using the bootsector antivirus option in the BIOS doesn't always work, newer and more destructive viruses are released all the time - Also, it can get in the way sometimes.
the error you are getting could be related to the mbr being updated by windows for some reason, As for updating the BIOS, it may fix the issue but I seriously doubt it. XP has undesirable crashes and burn outs after changing the most simple of options in the BIOS (beleive me, I know..)
Good luck though.
