[RESOLVED] no sounds
i'm attempting to troubleshoot my recently installed sound card (creative 16 waveffects sound blaster) & my new speakers
(altec lansing acs33, 3 piece powercube)on my me system w/64 mb of ram but no sound, at least, regularly. yesterday, a music cd suddenly started to
play after i booted but quit again when i rebooted even tho i changed nothing else. i get the correct indications in win
media player so i know music is making it there. i plugged in headphones to the cdrom drive, no sound in them. the light
indicates the cd is activated. wav sounds won't play at all but i get the error msg, "MMSYSTEM004 The specified device is
already in use. Wait until it is free and then try again.", this is the only device using sound that is enabled. still no sound.
plus, i've upated my drivers & been thru microsoft's sound troubleshooter at www.microsoft.com/windowsme/support/default.asp ,still no sound.
anyone know how to fix this?

Sounds most like an IRQ conflict. What MB did you install into? What type of slot: PCI or ISA? Try plugging it into a different slot if you have one available(just make sure to uninstall and reinstall the drivers), if not, you need to go into bios and see if you can manually arrange the IRQ settings. If you are not familiar with tweaking your bios, you may be better off taking it into a shop and paying 30 bucks for someone to do it. (you can really screw up your system when you tweak IRQs)

I have exactly the same problem than you with the same card. It's not a IRQ conflict. I absolutely don't know what it is. I'm talking with someone from Creative who can help me. Please send me your email and i'll send you the answer to your problem when i'll received it from Creative.

It could be a software conflict. Make sure the old drivers are [b]completely[b] removed, as certain older, shared, dlls may be left behind and cause problems.
I had a similar problem with a set of Mwave® drivers on an old IBM Aptiva, after switching from WIN95a to 95b (OSR2). I had to manually install most of the drivers, since the WIN95b install was a plain vanilla one. The newer drivers failed to load, so I ended up installing the older ones. I suddenly started getting MMSYSTEM errors and MWMODEM internal errors (the modem and sound are on one card). I found that my old drivers had not been completely removed, and some of the old dlls were causing problems.

It's not a IRQ conflict or a software i know it's a BIOS problem so maybe updating your BIOS may be a quite interesting idea. Could you send me the chipset, brand and model of your motherboard so that i can maybe help you with your problem?

Ok, for the CD-Rom please verify that the CD-ROM cable is in your soundcard not on your motherboard.

Hate to tell you this, but check the hardware compatibility list at Microsoft. Don't think ME natively supports the SB 16 series of boards. I had a similar problem with my SB AWE32. ME would not install support for it when I installed the OS. So I did a add new hardware search and ME found it, installed drivers and it worked (believe it used the drivers from the Win98 install that I installed it over). Anyway, I would shut it down and the next startup would again show no soundcard. Go figure. ME is in need of at least 1 or 2 service packs before I'll dedicate more than 2 hours trying to get it configured and running...
