I had a similar problem recently due to a bad ide cable it works fine on the middle connector but not the end switched the cable and all works fine now.

older mobos have a barrel-like battery. You can recognize it by the 2 terminals (one on each side) that are soldered on the mobo. Oh, and they are usually wrapped in plastic.. just like a capacitor.
