Probs with MS Publisher 97 with an Me Upgrade
Hi,
Firstly I am not fully conversant with MS Publisher.
My friend has used MS Publisher 97 to create a webpage, and has successfully published it onto the net with no probs for 6 months.
However, he now has a new PC at home, but rather than the old Win 98 that he had, he now has Win Me as his OS. He has installed Publisher 97 onto his machine, and has got the PC net enabled without a problem.
However, he cannot open his webpage as the ".pub" file he has on his PC for editing using Publisher 97, it comes up with an error message stating that he... "cannot open a .pub file made with a different version."
But he is using the exact same registered installation CD that he used on his old PC.
So he cannot use publisher to develop or update his site...he has effectively lost the entire site!
But you can see his webpage on the preview window!
What is wrong? Is it simply that he is usng the dreaded Me?
Would it work ok if he put Win XP Pro on there instead?
Could it be that he was using Explorer 5.0 on the old PC, but now has 5.5 on the new one?
I am completely lost, and would appreciate any help to get my friend up and running.
Thanks guys.

Mmmmm that really doesn't seem right at all .... but there's all that packing & unpacking business with publisher files ...
I take it the site's still published - ' you can see his webpage on the preview window' so can't he just re-grab his own code ? so from inside IE 'edit with' .. ? (though does that get all the code? or just that particular page?)
He could also go grab a Free preview copy of say publisher 2002 that shouldn't be bothered by any earlier version or IE version conflicts then from within that use the 'save as' feature ... Try Publisher 2002 for Free
I don't use publissher at all, but surely when he published it, all he did was copy some files from his pc to some ftp site somewhere ? So can't he just connect & copy them back ...?
I'll have to agree with you, as I too suffer from this -' I am not fully conversant with MS Publisher'

Alas, I don't live in either Canada, or the USA, so as per usual, I am not worthy of the attention from Microsoft that I COULD be if I was American. Discrimination? Possibly! LOL
I could download his site into my PC, but then how do I import it into Publisher as it's native filetype (.pub), so that he can edit it further and maintain it? All the gifs and buttons are spread about into different files...so how is this done?

If you want a trial of publisher ... fill in the forms on the uk link ... they do 'em here too !
As for the second bit ... " don't use publisher at all" ... sorry
But surely all the required stuff got copied up to his server space for it to be 'published' ... as I said I don't know how you 'rebuild' from that ... but at least you have all the source ??
