    CD-ROM Doesn't Read (Win 98)

well to sum it all up i went to install a game and in the middle of the download it said insert play disc which is the one i already had in..i went to the game companies tech site and they showed that this was a common problem they told me to run-->msconfig--> disable auto.exec.baat file-->disable autostart programs...i did so and tried reinstalling the game but it did the same error message "insert play disc" so i went back into run abd enabled the items i disabled..then restarted and came to find out my CD rom didn't read any of my CD's.. im possitive theirs nothing wrong with the CD its in mint condition and works on my freinds PC..help me please =(

    Welcome to windrivers Ratman

Lets test the unit first (it probably is s/w 'weirdness' given your explanation, but lets make sure), try booting from your windows cd by setting bios to boot from cd.

If it does that it says your unit is ok, & we can look at s/w ...

Can you tell us what version of windows ?(oh d'uh - it says in the title win98 - which one?) Also does it show in my computer or not? Does it show in device manager or not? From your explanation its all a little unclear ...

This issue usually comes along with a "copy" of the original game cd. Make sure it's legit and you didn't get it from KaZaa or some such place.

Well yeah ... I know all about that ! but here :-
..then restarted and came to find out my CD rom didn't read any of my CD's..
That's one mad crack that can do that !

Probably more likely we've unticked or altered something required, maybe as this is 98 it was set up with real mode drivers, & we haven't re-adjusted all the config.sys & autoexec.bat entries correctly ?
