    My Computer Beeps

A friend just rebuilt a computer for me because the motherboard on my old one was fried. Its working beautifully, except a beeping noise happens about every 10 minutes (1 short beep) and comes directly from the inside of the computer. I'm pretty much a computer idiot, so if anyone could dumb it down for me and give me any suggestions on what to do, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    Welcome to Windrivers Carrie!

One beep every 10 minutes is an oddity. If you don't know your make and model download this and run it and then post the results

Its a prosigna desktop. The sticker on the side of the computer says that the model number is P450+/M1.

Hmmm would that be the 6450+ ?

What windows are you running on it?

Seems to me that something is happening in background that is causing a beep, although I would think that would come from the speakers rather than from something internally.

Your guess is as good as mine on the number. And I'm running Windows XP. Thanks,

Did he overclock your processor possibly? Usually when the internal speaker beeps it's not a good thing. When the internal speaker beeps while in Windows, it's usually Windows saying, "Hey! What the heck are you doing to me?"

Personally, I think it is some kind of BIOS setting and you might need to have a qualified person look at it. Or if you feel comfortable enough to just check it out, then take a look at your BIOS settings and make sure your cpu isn't running too hot or overclocked incorrectly, etc. If it were me, I would first reset the BIOS to default settings, then go through each setting one by one to tweak anything that needs tweaking. I would make sure the hard drives are set to either automatic or the correct kind of drive. I would make sure the CPU is set to either automatic or the correct CPU. Also, I would look and see if there is any "alarm" or "beep" or some kind of related setting turned on. Hopefully this is worded "dumbed down" enough. I can't think of any other way to describe it.

Btw,.. it might also be a virus. Make sure your virus scan definitions are up to date and run a full scan just to be sure.

This is an outside guess. I have a utility that came with the motherboard that checks the cpu temp. If that temp gets too high it starts beeping. I had the alert set too low and it started beeping and I didn't know what it was at first.

As I said that is just an outside guess but it wouldn't hurt to check for something like that. My motherboard is an Asus. I don't know what comes with a compaq.

Does the beep only happen in a game? What game?

You still have not clarified your statement about the mouse
