Looks like you've "lost" the system files somehow. Try the following: (Do you have 98se boot disk or CD: we'll need one of those)
1>After booting from the floppy or cd you get an a: prompt. Type c:\scanreg. After it scans and finds no errors, choose "view backups" and restore a registry from the day before the grief started.
2>At the a: prompt type: "sys c:"
Good luck
PS
I used to be the lead tech at Bloomfield College right next door to you about nine years ago. Say hi to Bloomfield. The big "R" is for Rutgers University.

thanks noonoo for the added help and happy mothers day.i followed tripleR's
advice but the sys command didn't work.then i followed your advice and it made
it to the windows 98 splash screen.after the screen the error message
"device or resource required by vfat is not present or unavailable.vfat cannot
continue.system halted.
i searched old posts and found mskb#139063.

Did you try any of the "fixes" in the mskb article?
Path should also include c:\windows
So:
Path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command
That, however should not have changed on it's own. You can try "scanreg" to restore a previous working system registry, but do as the kb article states step by step.
