Welcome to Windrivers seann33uk
It is unusual - usually the dvd bit is the one to stop working.
as you can see there are a fair few types of deskpro en which is yours?
I would try downloading and installing this It is the layer that drives the cd side of things. After installation (and reboot) run the aspichk.exe in the adaptec folder and let us know the results of the test.
When you let us know which en, we can point you at updated motherboard drivers which may help as well.

Assuming I have guessed correctly - based on the info you have given me this is the driver page for your compaq I suggest you check the label on the back to make sure.
There are chipset drivers which need to be downloaded and installed. There are also updates for easy cd if this combo was supplied with the deskpro. If not - what do you use for burning software?

OK then get yourself a lens cleaner. And please check the label on the back of the compaq. I think it would be faster than to keep guessing.

the DVD/CD rw combo didn't come with the computer i've got it off some one. i use NERO mostly to burn on to CD's.
i originally used a lite-on cd rw with high speed do you think that might of f**ked up the drivers so the samsung combo can't work

There are two 1 gig procs listed - please just look at the label?
It doesn't play - it cleans. Go to pc world, dixons, curries, local hifi shop where ever and pick one up. If the drive spins the cd or dvd, it will clean it.

My post above (post 12) gives you the direct link to the chipset drivers, which I tried to direct you to on the 5th post.
Nero comes with an information tool - found on the start > programs > ahead menu. What does that report?
Do you have another pc in which to try this combo unit. It may just be plain old faulty.
