    No dialtone detected

    When I try connecting in DUN, the dialtone is not detected when I try to connect. I've checked everything. All my lines are installed correctly, I've tried two modems that work on other systems, I've tried new phone line, new modem cable, new com ports, ensured TCP/IP is installed, got the right driver. The modem installed correctly as I checked it in Control panel. When I try to connect, I get a short flurry of lights on my external modem, but then get a 630 error, no dialtone detected. I'm computer literate but I feel real stupid right now. Any ideas?

    Don't feel Sillie! try this:

    remove your existing drivers from device manager
    re-boot
    when windows says it has detected your modem goto specify and
    install a generic driver for your modem

    for example if your have a Diamond Xpress x56 install the Generic 566000 driver.

    and then use phone dialer to check whether the modem actually dails.

    My reason for this is that I have a USR 33.6 Voice modem and the people @ USR still haven't managed to sort out there drivers for it! I always use Up-to-date drivers apart from the modem I use a generic one from windows and it works fine without the sillie "No dial tone" prompts etc.

    Thanks bonkers, I'll try that tomorrow and let you know. Coincedentally, the modem I'm trying to use is the USR sportster 28.8 VI voice modem. I got a new driver though that was dated last week. Maybe that's the problem. Anyway, thanks for taking time to reply.

    Your problem might also be part of the dial up networking. After installing many modems, windows 95 only keeps reference to the last modem.
    Go to My computer, Dial up networking. Right click on your connection to your IPS and select the proper modem.

    You might want to try and dial the local time and temp number through Hyper Terminal. If you get a dial tone and it connects then you have a problem with DUN. I suggest you remove DialUp Networking in Windows Setup and then after removing it - install it back in. And you even might want to download msdun13.exe from microsoft. Which is the latest and greatest from MS (if there is such a thing). And just setup the modem up as a Standard Modem, usually works for anything, espically the USR 28s. Good luck...

    Thanks for the reply. I'll check your suggestions. I'm really frustrated at this point. I've tried so many things, and NOTHING works.

    Hi. Saw your message when I looked through the back numbers and it rang a bell with me. I hope you have by now sorted your problem, but here in the UK I had a similar problem recently, and it was solved by my non-computer illiterate wife. The telephone dial tone had been momentarily changed by the intrusion of a "call-minder" service, which the modem didn't recognise it and persistently gave the error 630 message. Clearing my messages cleared the tone and hours of work examining my DUN connections was resolved. It was such an obvious answer when I thought about it, I thought it worth remembering that sometimes the most obvious answer gets overlooked! Good luck.

    Thanks tedg, but I don't have that kind of service. But I brought the CPU upstairs and used a 56k modem and that worked but when I took it downatairs again, it wouldn't work with either of the 2 28.8 modems I have that work elsewhere. It seems like it's only at that one Jack, but I cna make regular phone calls at that Jack, but can't use the modem. I'm dumbfounded. But thanks for taking the time to reply to my quastion. I really appreciate that.

    You may have a noise problem at that particular jack and the modem wont recognize it.
    try running a new set of wires to the jack or changing the jack itself that may cure your problem

    you will have to open jack and see if the red and green wires are in the center two positions and while looking into it the green wire is to the right with the lock tang down
    from the right they should read; yellow,green,red,black

    It might be something basic. Try removing the modem from device manager. Then reboot and go into BIOS. Disable Com 2 or whatetever port you want to put your modem on. After restarting Windows and re-detecting your modem, go to device manager and remove the com port that you disabled in BIOS. This should leave your modem free and clear for that port.

    You made note of the make and model modem you were trying to use. Does this mean you are replacing a prior modem. If so, what was it's make and model. After uninstalling a Zoom 2925 PCI/HCF style modem's drivers for example, it has a bad effect to say the least. Ranging from the error of "modem not responding" to your classic "no dialtone". To leave the drives installed had no side effects that I noticed. However, once they had been installed once, no other modem wanted to function correctly after their un-installation. Enjoy!!
