A national guardsman just back from a tour of duty in Iraq won $143,000 a year for life on a state lottery scratch ticket.

John Morrissey, 42, of Norwood, said the winnings will get him out of bankruptcy and help him to pay for his daughter's college.
I'm glad for him but what about the other Guardsman, many of whom are also facing bankruptcy while they serve in Iraq?

Hey, what about all the junior enlisted that need food stamps for their families while on active duty, Iraq or not? This is something that's been an issue for years, not just recently.

That's why there's some Dems that are bringing up talk about a draft, or "government service"; because the military just cannot supply the same compensation as the private sector for similar jobs. Add to that the fact that vet's benefits keep getting scaled back every so often, and the picture becomes even more disparaging.

I wish I could remember where I saw it but the services have exceeded their recruiting targets (actually recruitment plus re-enlistments).
The problem seems to be the unwillingness to expand the regular military.
In fact here is a story from today where a General says he is against expanding the Army because it "would hamper efforts to modernize the service"

Just remember hardware lasts for 10-20 years. Those pesky soldiers need to be trained and fed and taken care of. And they don't contribute one lucrative defense industry job for Generals who decide to cash in.
