Unhappy Can't Record with ALS120 Card on W95

I installed an ALS120 sound card in a Pentium-S W95 machine. The speakers port worked after reinstalling W95, but neither the microphone or the midi inputs connect with Sound Recorder or my other recording software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Windrivers ALS200

First of all, are you sure the mic works? Can you test it elsewhere?

Second, are you using the line in or the mic in jack? Or does this particular card have linein/mic combined?

Third, control panel, multimedia, what are the devices shown for playback and record? Are they greyed out? Is the check box, "use only preferred devices" checked?

Fourth, either click start, run and type in sndvol32, click ok or double click the speaker icon in the systray next to the clock and check that none of the playback devices are muted. Then click on the top left of the volume sliders box - options - properties. Check the radio button recording, click ok Is the mic selected in the volume sliders? Is the slider all the way up?

Older soundcards cannot record and playback at the same time.... when you are using soundrecorder, does the line move? If so, you can record, but you cannot monitor what is being recorded, you will have to play it back afterwards.

Lastly, some cards have a microphone boost to up the input of the signal from the mic. Unfortunately I do not know if your sound card has one and if it has, where the little checkbox is likely to be.

    Hope this helps.

NooNoo - Thank you for your reply.

The microphone works fine on my other machines (XP and ME).

The card has separate linein and mic jacks, and I have tried them both.

Multimedia shows Avance Sound Playback for playback and Avance Sound Recording for recording, both using address 220. "use only preferred devices" is checked (I've also tried using it unchecked).

Using sndvol32, no devices are muted, and the mic slide is all the way up.

When using soundrecorder, the line does not move.

I don't believe this card has a microphone boost.

I don't think it is the card, because I had the same problem when I tried a SB 16 card. I'm hoping that there is some other W95 setting that can be changed to make both the mic port and the midi port work. Could there be a problem with the I/O using the same address for both playback and recording? This machine used to be an NT machine which had no sound card. I've tried both cards in 3 different slots, all with the same results.

    Thanks

did you check the record sliders? Was the mic selected (on record you have to select and some think it means mute as it does for playback)

You're not going to believe this (or maybe you will). The mic port on the ALS200 board is for a stereo plug! Once I put an adapter on the microphone it worked fine.

Now that I have my midi cables connected correctly, that's working too.

The basic rule I keep almost learning over and over again: Those air gaps will get you every time!

    Thanks for your help.
