Volume Control not available

trying to fix a Win98se machine which has an all in one MB from Elite (K7S5A mb)- but has no sound .
Tried all i could to get sound from it , but gave up and went and got a twin for my own sound card (other machine but running XP) Creative Audio PCI 128(model CT 4810).
Put the card in, windows found it and tried to install drivers, but of course there were as yet none.
I put in the vibra 128 cd rom from my identical card( yup Same model number stamped on it) but when i got to detup, got a message that program could not find my sound card .Ok, then tried take all out inc. physically. reinstalled sound card , ditto windows found, but no driverers, but cdrom couldnt find the card so wouldnt install.
after hours of this , onto web , got drivers from Creative - but they only now have "update" drivers , and they will not install without the original ones .
Finally found a file on net which i used, it had an automatic installer - originally from creative-installed and I HAVE SOUND .
BUT HOLD IT , i have no volume control!
ok hunted web, found that there are place(s) in control panel etc to enable it - but everywhere it is "greyed out".There is no Volume control in startup ( using MSCONFIG)
Ran SFU- no errors found.
Checked for SNDVOL**.*** found i have sndvol32.exe in c:/win and sndvol32.chm:hlp:cnt: in c:/win/help sndvol.lgc in c:/win/applog
Went to add/remove - found volume control was supposed to be there , uninstalled: restarted : reinstalled : restarted. Result =nothing , still no volume control.
Now suspect that drivers may be incomplete , as the automatic installer (which is SBAUDIOSetupus.exe) says it is uncompressing SBAPMAIN.lib , then SBapw9x.lib. but ONLY SBapw9x.lib is in the files with it, NOT SBAPMAIN.lib.
However, as i'm an amatuer, i really dont know .
Could use some informed help PLEASE.

What happens if you doubleclick on the file sndvol32.exe?

If it successfully opens and you are able to adjust the sound, throw that .exe into your startup folder. Definitely sounds like you don't have the full or right set of drivers for that particular card.

NO go im afraid , that I had tried. but have news below.

The option for volume control was there , but greyed out .

OK ,problem solved ( not fixed ,but solved)
Got sick of cd rom not working.Gave it one last try , by pulling sound card from my machine and swapping it over .Sure enough the drivers installed, and the volume control worked ,etc.
So i figured that there was someting wrong with the sound card . BUT when I put it back in , everything worked fine , and it worked fine in my machine.AND the model numbers STILL match exactly.
So im putting down to an act of god , returning friends machine quick, and resolving never to volunteer again .

Actually, everyone is. We expect it. Heck, we thrive on it. Glad to hear things got fixed. Gotta love those 'will of God' repairs.

The official solution I usually give the customer is 'magic hands'. They usually don't ask any further questions once you tell 'em that.
