pentium II shuts down with win98 boot

hi i'm trying to install an HP surestore cd-writer on a win98 pentium II machine
but apparently there is a driver problem
because when I install the drivers for the writer the PC automatically shuts down after
    booting (approx. when loading drivers)
When I boot in safe mode it all works fine
when I uninstall the cd-writer drivers win 98
    boots just fine again

has anyone ever heard of this before?
if you did please leave a message or mail me
    [email protected]

    thanks

    Which HP writer is it???

If it is using the Adaptec Easy CD Creator software download the patch to 3.5a ( or B now I think ) and update the firmware for the writer if needed.

Ensure the drive if IDE is set to SECONDARY MASTER , if it is SCSI then set it to the last but one device in the chain. Ensure the reader is directly the next device in the chain on both IDE & SCSI.

Remove all DOS drivers ( even for the reader drive ).

Ente win98 in safe mode & uncheck the DMA check box for the writer under device manager.

Also download the latst ASPI drivers from Adaptec.com.

Give these a try. These normally cure most CDR probs
