swap motherboard in win98 withot reinstallation

hi folks thanks for all the great advice. you guys are priceless.
I saw an article on mobo swap without a full reinstalling unfortnately this was for winXp.
Can i do same with win98se?
please show me the steps

Go into the registry and find the Enum key (on the left under) HotKey Local Machine and delete it (in safe mode if you have already installed the new mobo). After you reboot go to Add New Hardware and let Windows find and install your new devices.

That's what I do...wish it would auto-detect it, but delete the ENUM is the easiest way. You could take it a step further and uninstall and major drivers from the older hardware.

W98 will load OK (usually) without a reinstallation, but be prepared for lots of hardware detection and rebooting, and loading drivers. No big deal, just annoying.

My experience agrees with slgrieb's observation. I'd think deleting the ENUM key could give a cleaner result, but generally 98 seems to be pretty flexible about transplants. Video can be its weak point, so I find it worthwhile reverting to Standard PCI VGA before a swap. Some video (notably S3) can be mis-detected at startup causing annoying lockups.

(If installing fresh onto S3 video - these days probably most likely to show up as VIA on-board video - I find it's simplest to choose the Advanced install and if Windows announces its intention to use its S3 driver, change it back to Standard. The S3 driver is for the old 2D chipsets and bombs out on anything more recent.)
