Dos write back?
Does Dos write back partition information to floppy during installation.
A friend has an old 486 which had 500MB drive so I gave him a 1.2gig drive I had. He only uses this box as a midi controller not much power is needed, but when I fired it up it would only show the new drive as 500MB. The OS is Dos 6 on floppy's and Win95a Upgrade also on floppy's.
Because the registration is entered automatically during install, I thought maybe partition info too. thanks for any ideas.

Err, No, DOS does not write any information during the installation.
Make sure 1.2 Gig hard disk is being detected by the BIOS before going any further. Connect the disk up to the old hard disk, and use partition magic or similar to copy the old hard disk onto the new one.

In addition, not all BIOSes recognize large HDD's.
In oreder to bypass this limitation Use EZ-Drive from WD (it's free).
Good Luck
