    Problem fixed

The download and installation of the 88 high priority updates took about half an hour with no problems or errors and has solved the shutdown problem which SP3 created which I think t34b4g5 said it might. When I shut down it stays shut down.

I will hold off FDISK for now and avoid SP3 as the computer is running fine now and as the saying goes "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but any more problems it's FDISK. I will now get what of the of the non priority updates I want.

I think I will avoid Norton altogether as it was NIS 2008 and PM8 which caused my original problems forcing me to do a clean install of XP. I have no need to create or alter partitions and there is plenty of good AV software.

Thanks for all your help and advice all

I really prefer not to instal SP3 as the machine is running really well now and I don't want to rock the boat. I do not intend to do any further major tinkering unless it goes wrong again. I am also put off using anything Norton.

You can get the floppy versions if you want, but the bootable CD is offered

    Greetings.

Good to hear that you can now shutdown and keep it shutdown.

Also the 80 or so updates that you encountered was exactly what i was reffering to. Now i would suggest check the windows update site and see if there are anymore updates.

At this point in time i would suggest redownloading the sp3 and giving that another shot.
But i also agree with your "if it's not Broke don't fix" was of thinking.

It's nice to hear that we were able to throw around some ideas and get this problem fixed.
