Both Darwin's grandfather, Josiah Wedgwood, his uncle, Jos Wedgwood, were prominent abolitionists.

I was really impressed until I found out they bought the damned thing at a "Fossil Flea Market", or "Swap Meet", or something. There's the dedicated Paleontologist searching the booths and tables, credit card in hand, searching for the world's nect greatest find. Gak!

It would be interesting to have an analysis done on human devolution vis-a-vis burgeoning populations.
The advent of intensive mass-production of foodstuffs and other goods eliminated the need for massive populations to provide services and support for their brethren, yet we produce people out the whazoo day in and day out who now have nothing to do and nothing to contribute but to consume (a science fiction short was written about this issue 40 years or so ago).
In fact, the ability to get a job in the ever-decreasing tech fields (anything technical) is actually forcing talented people to give up hope.
Soylent Green anyone?

And how do we know they are not still among us? I swear I have spotted several Neanderthals, particularly aroung gyms: heavy, protruding eye brow ridge, lantern jaw, weak chin, sloping forehead, etc. The truth is out there!

Ah, did they, or didn't they? The only folks I can find in favor of Neanderthal-Homo Sapiens crossbreeding seem to be Creationist advocates, seeking to kick the slats out from under that pesky Evolution Theory. Just as I don't look to science to deal with my beliefs, I won't look to religion to deal with my facts. <sigh>

While there doesn't seem to be genetic evidence of H. sapiens sapiens and H. sapiens neanderthalensis having interbred, I don't think you can rule out the possibility without understanding the prevalence of drug and alcohol usage among human populations of the era.
