Hi Everyone,

I have a Mitsumi 4X CDROM Drive that is about 4 years old. It was working fine except whenever I tried to install Windows Messaging or Microsoft Fax from the Win98SE CDROM. My computer would freeze up so badly I would have to hold down the button for 4 seconds and restart.

Today I tried again to reinstall Windows messaging in my computer. I received an error message to clean my CD ROM. I did so and I gave it an extra good cleaning, and viola, it worked… at least for awhile. I was able to copy WMS.EXE onto my desktop and install it from there. However for some reason after I did this I got the same error message that my CDROM required cleaning.

However now the problem is that my CD ROM doesn’t work at all. It still ejects, and there is a light that flashes momentarily on start up. However when I insert a disk it doesn’t recognize it.

I went into the Device Manager and saw that it was listed as ‘disconnected.” I unchecked this item and tried again. Nothing.

Does this mean that my CD ROM has finally died on me or is there something I can do to fix it?

I also tried cleaning it but it won't recognize any disks.

On my System Configuration Utility, it says in the last lineEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\MTMCDAI.SYS/D:CD1

(This is an exact quote, could there be a mistake in the language?)

My CDROM is in the 'E' drive not 'D' drive.

I have a WIN98SE OS, IOMEGA 100 Disk Drive, Floppy Drive, and 4G HD. VIA Apollo MVP3 Chipset on Tekram P5M3-A+ Mobo.
