Hello

i'm in need of a little help with a customer Dell pc

From what i've gathered from the tech who was working on this system when it first came in2 the clinic the problem was it was running slow, after my fellow tech installed xp home with SP1 over the top of the orig install that did not have SP1 installed (run the repair feature after the F8 option during the cd boot) it now gives the following error on bootup.

"Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small. To fix this problem go to system in control panel, click the adv tab, and under performance, click settings on the adv tab click change. click 'custom size' then type in an initisl or maximum paging size"

This message appears on the welcome screen when you type the p/w in for the profile it then says its loading your personal settings, then it will either stop there and u will then need too use ctrl+alt_del to finish entering xp or the above error message will appear.

Sys spec:
Dell Dimension 4400
int pci Modem
int pci nic
Agp Ati v/c
P4 1.7
680 Meg ram
Win XP Home (sp1)

The system did have 6 infestations of BugBear-B that now has been fully cleaned off, also all items have been removed from startup via msconfig and also only Microsoft services are running as it had Norton Utils running in the background and i've made sure all othere third party crap has been unticked from services and startup tab in msconfig.

I have used a diff hdd on the system and installed a bear copy of winxp home inc sp1 and the system works fine no error messages and the paging info if configed up ok.

The same error message also apears when u try and enter safemode of there install of xphome both if u try and log in as admin or under there own profile.

I found the following info when i hunted theough the MS knowladge base:

article 315270

Ive followed the steps it suggests that should fix the issue severl times without success

Under local disk properties (security tab) were in the artical it suggest making alterations the cust has the following info:

Administrators: (PC\Administrators) Full control is ticked
Creator Owner: only special permissions is ticked
Everyone: System: Full control is ticked
Users (PC\Users) Read & Execute, List Folders Contents, Read are the only ones ticked

I have tryed del each setting and resetting them just using defaut settings as well as what the artical suggests but still no joy.

Under the virtial memory setting in system properties in the total paging file size for all drives it has:

Minimum allowed 2mb
Recomended 960mb
Currently allocted 0mb

from all the diff things i've tried it will not allocate anything to the paging file.

Thanks in advance for any help u can offer regaring this problem.
