Thanks for the welcome, and yes I see on board sound does seem to have its share of trouble. I looked at those updates and how can I tell if they are already installed? The maker installed everything including every update from Microsoft , I know the sound driver version number is different on my from the one (version5.12.1.3580) than the one in the link and it seems logical that might be the problem but I am fairly new with computers and it tells me to type the path in after I uninstall the old one, if i screw that up will I screw everything up? lol , other than no sound I am quite happy with the computer.
As for the audio properties in the control panel under playback and record soundmax digital audio is there, although under sound schemes it is blank, is that normal, the choices are windows default or no sound.
And the cats being in the pail is completely voluntary, silly kitties, so no I am not mean to my cats lol.

Mmmm don't you just love onboard souncards, they work a treat everytime - NOT !
For a start look here - Intel® Desktop Board D865PERL & apply all the chipset patches & drivers it suggests ... try those, then if still no sound come back (there are some 'fat' downloads there !) - most likely its the WDM (windows driver model) playing up again ('scuse the pun!) ....
