Best answer I've come up with are the steel cases photographers use, much better- 1/4 inch plate !
We have of course considered Insurance !?! - if the school 'insists' then they ought to have some insurance scheme, 1500 kids, or whatever, sounds like muggers paradise to me, never mind the ones that just get 'broke' ....
