I have no issues with my AMD systems and editing though my one bud does have some colling issues (runs the PC in a 90+ degree environment and wonders why cooling is an issue). In fact, by design or not, some Adobe software runs up to 25% faster on AMD systems, per maximum PC. I have a P4 2.0ghz with 1gb ram and a athlon 1.2ghz with 512mb ram and the athlon will render almost as fast in premier 6.0/6.5 even after the patch for intel processors is put on it. Kind of ticked me off when I found out though I do love my p4 in general. If you buds having issues, have him post them, I'd bet if it's hardware it's not related to the CPU (and maybe we could help). Wait though, you're talking about video compression like Divx or Xvid aren't you? Don't know much about that or the tools for them.
bookmarkmns - the video card that is in the system is not the biggest problem with editing performance. If the card is really old then it could cause issues with the ability to render effects but if he's not complaining about it then he's probably OK.
Also, ME is a major issue, not having a stable OS while waiting for a video to render for 2 days and having an error pop up 5 minutes befre it finishes can be a real treat I can tell ya. Also limits you to FAT32 so no files bigger that 4.3gb which is also another PIA. Make sure the drives are NTFS to avoid that issue. Nothing like pulling a whole video off the camcorder instead of chopping it into 3 or 4 bits you have to hope edit together well later on. That and if the final DV file is to large it's tough S with FAT.
