Odd sound problem

I just built a new system, which means my wife gets my old one. The old one worked like a champ for me, no problems at all, it was just slow (900 mhz).

So I set up the old system for my wife to use, just moving her old 10 GB hard drive to the new(er) motherboard. So the only hardware that's changed is the motherboard and video card.

The issue is that when ever playing ANY sort of sound, whether a DVD movie, .avi, MP3, CD audio or CD game, the sound gets really choppy. At first I thought it was her sound card (an ISA Sound Blaster 16), so I replaced that with a Phillips PCI PSC605. The sound is still choppy, but in a different way now (the stuttering is at a higher frequency rate now).

System specs:

Windows 2000 Professional
ATI Radeon 7000 AGP
10 GB WD 7200 RPM hard drive
Gigabyte 7IXE motherboard

Everything has the latest drivers available.
There were no problems before doing the hard drive swap and I'd really rather not have to do a format/restore, anyone have any sugestions?
