DVD-RW works but CD doesn't (combo drive)
Hi there, long time no post.... I've got a wierd scenario here. I recently built a box for my friends daughter,as hers was old and the cd-rw had quit working, it actually physically burned a music cd she had left in the drive overnite. I just thought it was old and replaced it(although i'd never seen a drive physically "burn" a disc as this one did.) I reformatted it and replaced her win2k with XP Pro, as well as upgrading everything in the computer but the case. I gave her an Emprex DVD+-/RW CD-RW combo burner I had been using for about 6months and got myself a dual layer drive. About 3 weeks after installing the dvd drive, the CD features quit on that drive. The DVD playing and burning is fine but it won't even read cd's, the explorer window comes up as blank, even though a known good cd is inside. It does this in several computers, from win XP to 98.
My only guess is that perhaps the 2 are related, has anyone heard of a downloaded mp3 file damaging a recorder? she was listening to some just before the cd functions went dead. I've done full virus and spyware scans with clean results......Any other Ideas?
TIA
