First, see if you can grab a copy of MSconfig.exe from a Win98 Machine, it should work fine.
makes things easier, or there are other utilities from download.com that can do the job like <a href="http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1461989-100-5943130.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-5.5943130" target="_blank">Startup cop</a>
Files you may need:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSCONFIG.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\HELP\MSCONFIG.CHM
C:\WINDOWS\HELP\MSCONFIG.CNT
C:\WINDOWS\HELP\MSCONFIG.HLP
c:\windows\system\tmsconfig.dll ??don't know about this one

Three Places to look
  • Start menu:
    under the Startup section
    often c:\windows\start menu\startup
  • WIN.INI
    you can run SYSEDIT.exe
it should be under the [windows] section as the run= and the load= lines
  • Registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run << this one starts up the programs no mater who logs on
    or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run << this one is just for the user currently logged in

also check under Runservices while in regedit under currentversion.
