IPX/SPX

We have an office connected to our main office via an ISDN link. We want to allow them to access the internet across the link through our Proxy server but we dont want their IPX traffic from their Novell server on the link. Unfortunately, the phone company used an Ascend bridge instead of a router which doesnt allow us to filter IPX. We could install a router but we dont want that much of an expense. Is there a less expensive way to filter out the IPX traffic. Thanks for the help.

Which proxy are you using?,,,it should be possible to filter IPX either there or at the firewall

We use MS Proxy but that is irrevelant. We dont even want the traffic to make it onto the ISDN line. We only want TCP/IP traffic across the ISDN but we have a Novell server on the other end which of course is generating the IPX. The clients on the other end will be using IPX to access the Novell server and TCP to go across the ISDN for internet.

I'm by no means a network tech and do not claim to know anything about it, but couldn't you set up a firewall on their end, just before the isdn line to filter the ipx packets out?

You could but that would probably require a dedicated computer with firewall software and that would be a little too expensive. Good idea though. Might end up being our only choice.

a 486 running FREE linux with a firewall setup would be very cheap

When you mention the expense of a router how much do you mean? Like a cisco 1600 or something? You can always get a Linksys DSL/Cable router. It is one RJ45 hookup for hooking to the lan and one RJ45 forhooking to a cable/DSL modem or in this case the bridge. The router only transports TCP/IP no IPX/SPX and you can get it from onsale for like a hundred bucks. You can look at it at

to see if it is what you need. I know you don't want to spend any money but this is all I can think of.
