Post Shutdown Problems with Win98 SE

We have win98 se running on a system (Duron 750, J663AS MB), After the user has played ANY game when he goes to shutdown the system the PC hangs on the "Windows is shutting down" Screen. BUT if he does not run any game then it shuts down properly. We have tried installing different games and still hangs after finishing game. We have JUST got this system so are still trying out things <IMG SRC="smilies/redface.gif" border="0">).

Any help will be great, thx.

I'd have to say you've got a problem with yer vid card or sound card drivers. Check with whoever made those cards (you didn't say what they are), and make sure the drivers are recent. You could also remove the sound card and stick a different vid card in and see what happens after playing a game.

What kind of game? Is is Windows solitaire, or Counterstrike? If it is a 3D type game, you may find that it is changing the resolution back and forth to play the game and frying the video driver when it comes back. Bad video settings (either driver or missing IRQ, etc) are the #1 reason by far for 98SE shutdown errors (and the shutdown patch will NOT fix these).

    1. Update Directx if it is not the newest version.
    2. Install the shutdown patch.
    3. Update all your drivers.
    4. Update your BIOS as well if an update is availabel.
    5. Finally try another video card and/or sound card.
    6. If neither of the above work, throw your machine out the window while going down the freeway at 90mph.

    Good luck!

Your PC could use Advanced Config and Power Interface (ACPI). The fast shudtown feature could possibly be disabled. Another reason could be related to anti-virus software. Some anti-virus programs that scan your floppy disk drive when you go to shutdown can cause this problem too.
