Unhappy Win95B, USB Supplement & Scandisk

I am trying to get the USB supplement installed onto a laptop with Windows 95B. No matter what I try, Scandisk (which we know runs before the install) keeps restarting and won't finish. I've tried -

    1. Starting in safe mode
    2. Turning off all Laptop and Windows PM
    3. Turning off Screensavers.
    4. Only program running in Safe Mode is Explorer, nothing in sys tray.
    5. Running DOS Scandisk (Which works and reports no errors.)
    6. Checking for viruses.
    7. Throwing the thing at the wall.
    8. Kicking myself for even thinking of no.7

    Anyone any ideas.
Possibly an application which will tell me of any 'Stealth' programs running.
Maybe a switch for 'usbsupp.exe' which will stop it running scandisk.

Your answers will be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    Martin

Remove a question mark in system (in control panel ).

Explore the system property and you will find a yellow question mark. Remove it , and restart the system.

Then if it doesnt find the files , type : c:\windows\system

USB will worked thene . If it doesn`t , then you do not have a system (mobo )that support USB.

Thanks for the help so far. The USB has always been enabled and is seen as another device in the System Properties. The customers laptop has always used the USB port but I don't know for what device. He naffed all the drivers and I had to reinstall the PCMCIA drivers and so on. The only device without the driver at the moment is the USB. I can't get the 'usbsupp.exe' to install fully as Scandisk (which it runs by default before installing) keeps restarting, as I stated in my original message.
I know Win95B is not the best for running USB devices, but you know what customers are like. 'It worked before, why not now ?'
All I want is to get round this 'Scandisk' issue.

Keep replying, it's got me going now !

    Thanks everyone.

    Martin

I don't know if the usb supp will load by doing this but, have you tried just cancelling scandisk by hitting the esc and exit?

Yep tried that also. Brings up the message that it will not install the supplement until Scandisk is finished.

Pain in the back lower region I'd say.

    Thanks anyway,

    Martin

laptops tend to have their own power managemnt schemes. try disabling that. also, this is just a guess, go into scandisk and set it up for standard, don't fix errors.

    Managed to solve it.

I ran scandisk manually and let it tick over, whilst it was running I ran the USB supplement. This saw that scandisk was already running and decided to skip it and install the drivers.

    Silly but simple eh !

Many thanks for all your replies. I hope this information will be handy for future reference.

    Cheers all

    Martin
