Scanreg runs upon boot
Help guys! I've got a computer (Windows 98) that insists on running scanreg/fix upon boot. Even starting in safe mode doesn't stop it and there is no config.sys or autoexec.bat files for it to hide in. Any ideas short of a format and reinstall? Thanks in advance.

Check the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

Sounds like you have a registry problem.
You could try reloading windows and see if it gets solved.
Windows will continue to load scanreg automatically if it suspects you have a registry problem.
Try looking for previous reg.
search for system.*, and user.* and see if any the same pop up.
ie: system.old, and user.old
Make sure they are the same or you might have troubles.

Check-out your MSConfig. (type msconfig in the 'Run' box).

Test the RAM in the system. It is probably bad. Once that is replaced you may need to reinstall windows, but you won't have to format.
