    Cool Buried Under

Is it just me?? The last few weeks I've been buried under a growing pile of PCs in for repair. My new computer sales are off slightly, but I can't get the bench cleaned off.

Its a nice problem to have by the way.......

Our busiest time of year is always the end of August, just before school starts, but lately, its been pretty steady. The side jobs have been picking up too.

I've had this problem since June of this year!!! New system sales down slightly, but the amount of upgrades repairs have been out of control!! (In previous years the summer is usually slow as heck for us)

Alot of it I attribute to the weather in our area... in the late spring/early summer there were a ton of thunderstorms. Also the weather was generally crappy, so maybe people skipped being outside/vacationing/ etc... and spent time on their computers either goofing them up or realizing how slow their systems were...

It seems like there has been at least 30 systems waiting for repair all of the time, no matter how many we put out per day... the total of waiting systems teeters around 30.

We thought we were almost caught up two weeks ago (the systems waiting for repair/upgrades were down to about 9) and then BAM! we got hit with a few days of customers and were right back to where we started.

Even today, I thought we were almost caught up (we only had about 7 systems in here), and just in the past 4 hours we've had 7 people drop off 8 systems!

Yep. I have the same problem too.

Christmas is the worst period. We have too much work to do. The current period is almost the same.

I've talked to another shop in our area, and they have said the same thing. New system sales down slightly, but repairs/upgrades are through the roof!

Also, one of my suppliers has been calling both our shop and another shop in our area. It seems our distributors sales are down. So I am assuming that it is not just the two of us with slowed system sales.

The beauty of it is, I think we make more in the long run on repairs/upgrades... when the customer walks out the door our obligation is done. If they have another problem, they pay for it. When a customer purchases a new system, you have to include the warranty service and the ton of silly calls into the picture.

Maybe the reason for slowed system sales and increased repairs is because everyone is buying POS Compaq, HP, emachine, etc systems. This is hurting our sales, but because they are POS systems... we make all the money repairing them!

Plus, after the customer learns the expensive lesson of buying a compaq/HP, etc... they'll probably buy their next system from us... and being that it's their second system we'll have less tech support/instructional calls!!

Thank you Compaq, HP, etc!! Keep up the poor work!!! We love you!

Yea, every year, when the weather gets cold, people stay indoors, install 2189345 pieces of shareware/freeware and bring their computers in. When its warm outside, they are all at the beach/vacation and leave their poor computers alone. This is gonna be one hell of an interesting winter at my shop. Juse myself and another guy working on machines now, the other 3 guys all got moved to a different dept. We typically get around 10-20 machines in during a week day, and around 10-15 machines out per day between the 2 of us. In a month we won't be able to open the doors because of all the computers in the way.

The onset of winter coinciding with the release of ME has boosted business by at least 50%.
The big sales going on at the "big box" stores helps as well.

    Cool

I wish that I knew what the secret is. In this area, south FLA, everyone I talk to is slow. I wish I had the units coming out the WAZOO but it is mostly day to day. Any suggestions would be great.

    LOL

We always get nearly double the traffic when AOl releases a new version, or any major SW manufacturers put out a new patch or service release!

    Just a thought........

Of the shops that are busy vs the shops that are not busy. Are the busy shops a big shop, part of a chain, or just your typical corner computer store? Same question for the shops that are slow.

New system sales are slow almost to the point of being dead (down from 2 a day at the beginning of the year to a total of 4 this month) but repairs and network callout's are through the roof. Revenue is down on the year to date by about 15% but profits are up by about 10%
