Post The Best Cable Modem & LAN Setup

I'm interested in a few ideas on my cable modem & lan.

Currently, I'm using ICS to share my connection.

    What's the best way?

    Any ideas?

I know a lot of people using Linksys Cable/DSL routers. It hooks to your cable modem then to a hub. Costs like a 100 bucks. I think it can do some packet filtering too to act as a firewall(but not really). You can find them at BestBuy and www.onsale.com.

    Thanks.

Will I need to buy separate IP's from my service provider or does the router handle assigning IP's.

i think the router can run dhcp, or just assign them manually using the 192.168.x.x ip scheme. i'll check linksys's site to see if it can run dhcp.

    Thanks.

I run a four PC network with 10/100 cards and an 8 port 10/mps hub. I am thinking of going to a 100/mps hub and cards. I am pretty sure the modem only gets 10/mps. Will the router work with all that?

The Linksys Cable/DSL Router has a 4 port 10/100 hub. It's extremely easy to setup, if you need more ports just add a 4 port hub.

OK, if I use the single port router, my existing 8 port hub, nics and cable modem, I should be all set. Or do I need the 4 port or 8 port router?(If so I would go 8 port, as I already have 4 machines on now). How about firewalls. Right now, using ICS, I just use the firewall on the main machine. Will I need to use firewall protection on all machines with the router setup?

    Sounds good.
I'll order the 8 port Linksys. I'll post my results when I get it set up.

    Thanks everyone, and Happy Thanksgiving!
