Windows Protection Error
At startup the following windows protection error message appears in Windows ME:
While Initializing Device PERF; Windows Protection Error. You must restart your computer.
I've been to Microshaft's site but there is nothing posted about this particular error message. Any ideas as to what device this is referring to? Any response is greatly appreciated. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I don't think there is any single fix to a problem like this.. But here are some things you can try that has worked for other people.. But what I would do first is use the msconfig tool, under the advanced option, disable the UDF file system and see if that works.

try booting to DOS using using a floppy, change to C:\ and change dir. to c:\windows\command\
then type scanreg /restore
this is your registry backup program a, it only stores back-up registry for 5 days. put an older registry in and see if you get it back.
