    Post Compaq restore problems

I have a compaq presario 5838 in my shop with the Hybris worm. I removed the worm, however he also had a lot of software corruption going on. Several progams complaining at startup, lockup etc. Recommended a system restore. We used his restore disks to restore the computer and the setup program gets almost done and performs an illegal operation, but still finishes the install. However the computer doesn't run long before it's blue screening. I install our win98oem and have no problems. I haven't got all the drivers however. The unit is sealed and the customer "thinks" he still has time on his warranty. Is there anything anyone can think of I should try before sending him back to the store where he got it ( I believe it's a store warranty not compaq)

Thanks for any and all ideas.

I suggest You to install any "hardware info"
programm You know having to detect all installed hardware. Then You can install all needed drivers.

Hey dude, I had a real similar problem recently with a Compaq and a Gateway computer. The restore disks would error out during the installation, but with some nursing, would finish installing. But the system was so unstable then, that you could not use it. Then I did a clean install of Win98Se and all was well. I then used the restore disk to install the programs that came with the machine. The machines are still up and running fine. I think the restore disks were bad. Maybe thats whats happening to you.

Well thanks for the replies! I think I may have discovered the problem. Does anyone know if Hybris damages the partition? After I repartitioned, reformated and reinstalled the computer and had no problems, I tried the restore disks again. Since the drive was no longer partitioned like it was originally it repartitioned, etc. and went without a hitch! So far the computer is running great. The only thing I can think of is either the partition was damaged or third time the charm!

By the way nice to see posts from you wildtech, haven't seen much from you lately.

    Thanks again.
