hp Vectra

We have an hp vectra that will not recognize any hd properly. When it came in it had a 2.5gb Quantum that it seem to see and that appeared to work. As often happens here we had need of a 2.5 gb drive before we got this one running ( used in house system ). Now when we replace the drive nothing gets detected correctly. It has a cable select cable in the system. We have tried setting drives to cable select , we have also used master setting with a normal cable and it always misdetects, either too high or too low depending on the drive. example wd 1.2gb = 255mb etc.

Any help would be appreciated
