Internet Connection Sharing

I'm getting my self prepared to set up a home network complete with Internet Connection Sharing. Always in the past I've used Wingate or WinProxy. This client, however, does not want to purchase any software so I"m gonna give it a go with the Windows version this time. One machine is running ME, the other 98 Second Edition.

Any common problems I should be aware of?? I'm open for tips and advice.........thanks

It's a simple task to do
Install ICS on the machine that has internet, it will make a client disk for you, for the other machines.
Make sure the primary machine is on the internet before you install the disk on the other computers.

IMPORTANT TIP!!

Remember to unbind "File and print sharing" from TCP/IP and NetBEUI (if installed) on the machine running ICS! Otherwise, you will have a major security hole running on your network.

How to do this varies between the various OS types (win 98 SE is a little different than win 2000 pro, I don't know about Win ME - it's a piece of crap at this point). Consult either the Microsoft KB, or there is a really good article on how to set up ICS at www.annoyances.org

I have my home / office network set up with ICS (on a win 2000 pro server), running many different clients (Win 98, 98 SE, win 2000, WFW 3.11, NT 4.0, several different Linux boxes), all without any problems. The only thing that is annoying is that Napster will NOT download anything when running on an client machine; you will need to use it on the server (especially if you are using a firewall program). Other than that, everything else works great: streaming media, FTP, Email, Web, Telnet, News, Chat, you name it...

With Windows ME, use the Home Networking Wizard on the PC with internet connection.. If you want to control the setup of the network, there's custom options, otherwise, just create the disk for the "client" machine and run it on the 98 PC.. This is the exact setup that I have...

As for ME sucking, that may be, but at least this feature works rather well...

Hey dr. witch what do you mean no downloads on the cleint pc when dloading napster?

We have four sharing and the kids all download together however there is a slight bit into the bandwidth performance. Just wanted to know incase.
