Thumbs down Maxtor 5100 Series Diamond Max Drives and ATA 66

If you are having problems implementing Utra ATA66 on a Maxtor hard drive I have some news for you. I spent the better part of the morning trying to resolve an issue with a 15.3 gig Ultra ATA 7200 rpm maxtor drive with a "Senior Tech" at Maxtor. I could always get the OS installed but after a day or two maybe sooner it would always crap out and give an assortment of errors. I had talked to Abit (BE6) MB and the folks at Highpoint (HOTROD 66 Controller)no one was much help. I finally called into Maxtor again this morning and asked for a Senior Tech or engineer. He was about to give up when he asked me to hold and came back in about a minute and said "Oh yeah we have been having problems with these drives and the Award Bios. So they are sending a "6800" series drive which is susposed to take care of the problem. I Hate installing hard drives the customer brings in. I think this might be the time to stop.

I've stopped suggesting or even using or selling the ABIT BE6 or BE6 II boards to customers or new computer builds altogether. To many conflicts with the on board highpoint ultra 66 controller and variety of hd's, not being able to use the 3rd pci slot because of conflicts with the hpt366 using irq 11, lockups with banshee chipset videocards, SB Live, etc, even with latest bios's and drivers. List goes on. Not one of Abit's best boards. You should go view the abit mainboard newsgroup and roughly half of the complaints and requests for help are with the ABIT BE6 or BE6 II board due to some of what I listed above plus mainy more.

Have the same problem with soyo's SY-6BA+IV
board, have to use them in a machine that can
give up that irq, even if I disable it in the
bios, of course win98 still saw it and of course because it is still sorta new soyo
    had nothing on their site.
