    Post buffer underruns

One of the solutions to bufferruns is to make sure your source(burner)and hard drive allow for disconnect. Under device manger my burner(Ricoh mp7040A)allows this. However my hard disk(generic ide disk type 47) under options has the disconnect, sync data transfer, and auto insert notification all unchecked. They are greyed out. and I do not know how to "check mark" disconnect.
Could this be a reson why I recieve so many buffer underrun errors.
    note ...I always defrag,shut down all programs(three finger salute)and screen savers,virus scans.

I don't think this is your issue Is dma checked? What is the hardware configuration for the burner and the hard drive? Sometimes on certain burning programs it would be necessary to turn off auto insert on the burner and the read only cdrom drive. What are you using to burn?

I am using cd creator 4 . I tried checking dma before but I thought I noticed the computer doing some strange things so I unchecked it. I will however turn off auto insert on my burner. As for confiuration of burner and hard drive how do I check that.

Burner should be master on secondary ide channel, but I've had them work as a slave on the secondary. Course, the hard drive is master on primary. Look in bios if you're not sure, or watch the screen on bootup. If you have a VIA chipset, get the latest drivers for it.

    Thumbs up

I'm running a Ricoh MP7060A which is just a 6x version of what you have and i'm using Adaptec Easy CD creator 4. In device manager i have Disconnect ticked, Sync data transfer unticked, Auto insert notification ticked and DMA unticked for the CDRW. For my hard drive, IBM DTLA307030 (ATA100 at ATA66) i have Disconnect ticked, Sync data transfer ticked, Auto insert is greyed out, Removable is unticked, Int13 is ticked and greyed and DMA doesnt appear at all. This is running on a Gigabyte GA7IXE4 motherboard with the busmaster IDE drivers installed, 800mhz Duron, 128MB ram and Win98SE. I have installed the 'patch' from Adpatec for the MP7060 drive (it would crash the comp at 6x otherwise) and it writes at 6x with very few problems. The CDRW is slaved on the secondary IDE controller with my Creative CDROM as master.

What sort of results are you getting when you carry out the system tests for your drives in Easy CD creator or Nero? Quite often you need to do a lot of fiddling before you get an optimum configuration for burning. Sometimes it works best with the Win98 default IDE drivers, other times (as in my case) it only works with the manufacturers IDe drivers installed. Sometimes DMA ticked, othertimes unticked. Also different media can give different results.

does the under run occur only when you are copying from a source disk in cd-rom drive.. If so did you check the cd-rom reader and test it. I had same prob with the ricoh 7060
and changed the reader cd-rom to a better quality and faster one. Also another thing I did was put the speed back from 6x to 4x in cd creator. That also stopped buffer underruns. I also downloaded firmware updates for the writer that helped too.

I sometimes get errors like problem with out put device (cd rom). However My dealer says there notting wrong with it. I somehow do not beleive him . My monitor was on power down to sleep mode in 15 minutes. Could this interupt the recording process. I usually get one for one . A good burn and toast.
My cd burner was taken out and tested and burned prefect cds. However the cds that I burn, you can see breaks between every track
like an old vinyl record. As for the burns I think I have a burp in my hardware somewhere.

I would definitely change your cd-reader especially if it has had some errors as you said.....Have you downloaded the following firmware upgrade which is important for ricoh writers...http://www.ricoh.co.jp/cd-r/cgi/e-/7040a_w-e.html

I upgraded the firmware to 1.60 and will try this for awhile .

Does anyone know if the ricoh mp7040a .ide supports multi-session recording?

I want to thank everyone who took time to read and respond to my problem...thank you

I have the Ricoh RW7040, which is the OEM version. Anyway, prior to burning I kill everything except for explorer & systray, then I start up my CDR program. I usually use Nero, CDRWin, or DiscJuggler. I'm not sure what firmware I have, but I believe it is the latest (or close to it). As for multi-session burning, mine supports it, but make sure you use the same program & burn at the same speed. Hope I've helped a bit.

I have a plextor 8x cdrw. I trieds plextor's burnware and adaptec 4 and could not get a cd to burn at 8x ever! I changed to Nero and never had a problem again. FYI. Good luck. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
